Lawrence J. Prograis, Jr. Dr. Lawrence J. Prograis, Jr., M.D., serves as Senior Scientist for Special Programs and Bioethics, Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation (DAIT), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health. He is responsible for developing and participating in inter/intra Institute activities concerning administrative and scientific matters associated with the Division’s immunology research training programs and bioethical issues. He maintains and develops liaison and working relationships with biomedical, professional and lay organizations to ensure they are fully informed of relevant NIAID and Division activities. Dr. Prograis obtained his BS degree from Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1970. He received his MD degree and Master of Medical Science degree with a concentration in Immunology, M.M.S. in 1975. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Meharry Medical College in 1978. In 1983, he completed postgraduate training in complement immunology at the National Institutes of Health. From 1978-1981, he was a postdoctoral research fellow in molecular immunology and a postdoctoral clinical fellow in allergy and immunology at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. In 1991, he completed the Senior Managers in Government Program at the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government. From 1989 to 1991 he was the Chief of the Asthma and Allergy Branch in DAIT. In 1991 he became the Deputy Director of DAIT. He served in this position until 2002. In 1999-2002, he completed the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Intensive Bioethics Program and a fellowship in Bioethics from the Center for Clinical Bioethics, Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Prograis is also an associate professor in the Department of Microbiology at the Howard University College of Medicine and an Affiliated Scholar in the Center for Clinical Bioethics, Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Prograis has received numerous awards, including the NIH Merit Award, the Public Health Service Special Recognition Award, and the Georgetown University Clemens von Pirquet Award in Allergy and Immunology. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He has published in the fields of allergy, immunology and ethics. His most recent publication is as co-editor with Edmund Pellegrino, Chairman, President’s Council on Bioethics with a book entitled “African American Bioethics: Culture, Race, and Identity. In the Center for Clinical Bioethics at Georgetown University Medical Center his research interests include, research ethics, specifically the clinical investigator-patient/subject relationship and ethics consultations.
