Cultural Diplomacy: Cuba

In April 2015 Company | E became the first American dance company in almost 60 years to perform for the public on a city street in Havana under the banner of the U.S. flag. That event was just one of a series of "firsts" as the Company, after years of effort, spent two astonishing weeks in Havana through the efforts of the-then U.S. Interests Section -- and now U.S. Embassy, in Havana. Building on the invitation of the Old Havana Street Festival, the Company danced, taught and collaborated with local artists throughout its residency.

Between concert performances throughout Old Havana, workshops in astonishing museums and classrooms scattered around the city, workshops on film and video and a remarkable Civil Society encounter with librarians and intellectuals, Company E encountered Cuban society in a way few Americans have since the two countries severed their diplomatic relations in 1961.

The outcomes of those remarkable two weeks continue to resonate as the Company, in partnership with Washington Performing Arts in Washington, DC, begin their planning for a season-long celebration of Cuban art and culture over the seasons to come.
